Maniac - Depressive disorder.
DEFINITION
The adolescents with a Bipolar Disorder can suffer continuous changes of humor that fluctuate between extremely (maniac) high places and (depressed) shallows. The high places can alternate with the shallows, or the person can feel two ends at the same time.
SYMPTOMS
Some of the symptoms look alike to others that happen in the adolescent with other problems, such as the drugs abuse, the crime, the Disorder of Shortcoming of Attention due to Hyperactivity (ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), or inclusive the schizophrenia. The diagnosis can only be done after a careful observation, during a long period of time.
TYPICAL OF THE MANIAC PERIODS
- severe changes of humor in comparison to other young people of the same age and ambience - or to feel too satisfied, or to laugh very much, or to be too irritable, angry, rough or aggressive
- high slightly realistic in the self-esteem - for example, the adolescent who feels almighty or like a super hero with special powers
- excessive increase of energy and the skill of being able to continue for days without sleeping and without feeling tired
- to speak excessively - the adolescent does not stop speaking, speaks very rapidly, changes topic constantly and does not allow to interrupt it
- distraction - the attention of the adolescent spends from one thing to other one constantly repetitive risky behavior, such as the abuse of the alcohol and the drugs, guiding rashly and carelessly or the sexual promiscuousness
TYPICAL OF THE DEPRESSIVE PERIODS
- irritability, depression, persistent sadness, frequent crying
- thoughts about the death or the suicide
- decrease in the aptitude to enjoy his favorite activities
- frequent complaints of physical, such discomforts as the pain of head and of stomach
- low level of energy, fatigue, bad concentration and he complains about feeling boring
- notable change in the bosses of eating or of sleeping, fell like eating or sleeping in excess
CAUSES
This illness can affect anyone. Nevertheless, if one or both parents have a Bipolar Disorder, there is major probability of which the children develop the disorder. The familiar history of abuse of drugs or of alcohol can be associated also with the Bipolar Disorder in the adolescents.
TREATMENT
The adolescents with a Bipolar Disorder can be treated really. The treatment for the Bipolar Disorder includes in general the education and information to the patient and to his family about the illness, the use of such stabilizing medicines of the humor like the lithium, the acid valpórico and the psychotherapy.
The stabilizing medicines of the humor often reduce the number and the severity of the maniac episodes and help to prepare also the depression. The psychotherapy helps the adolescent to understand himself, to adapt itself to the stress, to redo his self-esteem and to improve his relations.
