DEFINITION
It is a preventive procedure for which one covers the pits and healthy fissures of the teeth by means of the application of a resin. There supposes a barrier that protects the areas most capable of being attacked by the caries, preferably the faces triturantes of the later teeth.
SYMPTOMS
The sealants are indicated especially in the children with medical commitment (immunity suppression, cardiopatias, nefropatias...), physical or psychic disability, with caries in temporary teething, and with caries in some of the first definitive molars.
SKILL
After a case history and a meticulous exploration one proceeds to the cleanliness of the tooth to seal with pasta without fluorine, and later to the isolation and engraving of enamel, application of the resin and polymerization if it is necessary.
COMPLICATIONS
This preventive method is not infallible since in the sealed teeth caries can develop. For it it is important to realize periodic reviews of the sealed teeth and to be able to discover the development of a caries early, if it takes place. Some accusations have been spilled on the possible existence of certain not wished effects of the sealants. Nevertheless, the sealants have been accepted by all the competent organisms in this matter like the WHO, the FDI, ADA, etc.
