DEFINITION
The axial scanner computarizada (TAC) is a radiological diagnosis test by means of the use of x-rays and prosecution of the images for computer. By means of the computer the planes crossed by the x-rays are reconstructed. The image is constructed measuring the x-rays absorption for the crossed textile.
On having processed the images, they can be seen like three-dimensional courts in a monitor of television or in a radiography.
It obtains images very precise of the interior of the organism and of his different organs, allowing very precise diagnoses.
HOW IS IT REALIZED
The patient remains knocked down in a stretcher, and this one slides inside the pipe that generates the x-rays, which the patient turns about.
It causes neither pain nor any inconvenience. It produces neither claustrophobia nor noise as the RMN (nuclear magnetic resonance). The radiology technician remains in communication with the patient constantly across a communication system, indicating him the steps to be continued. In some occasions there is necessary the use of intravenous or oral radiological contrasts to see the function of certain organs. If you are allergic to these products, he must warn it previously (although they will wonder it before they are administered). For it it will be necessary to sign a written assent of acceptance of the possible risks. It is recommended to come on an empty stomach, although it is not definitely necessary. They will indicate it to themselves on having given him the appointment. If the study is digestive, to try not to eat neither food that produce "gases" the previous day, or that contain residues. On having given him the appointment, they will indicate him a list of food to avoid. A technician realizes the test in radiodiagnóstico and later a medical specialist in radiology is the manager of interpreting the images.
HOW MUCH LASTS THE STUDY
The duration is variable depending on the segment to be studied, if it is necessary to administer contrast, and of the rapidity of the team. The new teams are more and more rapid, fundamentally the spiral TAC, which can realize the cuts in scarce minutes. As maximum usually lasts approximately 20 - 30 minutes. After the exploration it is possible to realize a normal life.
INDICATIONS
All the regions of the body can be studied practically, from the head, thorax, abdomen, column, to the pelvis. By it all the systems can be studied practically: nervous, digestive, respiratory, gynecological system, urológico, the different vascular systems, the structures of the neck, the spine, evaluation of tumors, etc...
Not only it serves for the diagnosis for images, but also skills can be realized intervencionistas, directing the doctor on the area to be tackled: for example, a puncture of a thoracic nodule, drainage of an abscess, etc...
DISADVANTAGES
It is a test that uses x-rays, being common his dangers and disadvantages to others that use the above mentioned radiation. It produces a dose of radiation very superior to the produced one by the simple radiographies (although it will depend on the type of realized study). Therefore, although it can be used in children, it must have a clear indication, since these are more sensitive to the radiation.
In the pregnant women, if one can it is better to defer the test even after the pregnancy. If it is not possible the first trimester will try to realize it after past (period of major sensibility of the fetus to the radiations), but if the health of the mother is in serious danger and there is no alternative test it will be valued to realize it. In the women in fertile age and not pregnant women, if the study is not urgent, it will be realized in the first days after the rule.
The radiological contrasts can produce allergic reactions, from moderates to severe, even fatal, although in all the centers of radiodiagnóstico there is material and the personnel is trained to face to this contingency.
