DEFINITION
|
The break of the eardrum usually takes place for a difference of pressure between the internal part and the external part of the ear. Eustaquio's horn is a connection between the average ear, the later part of the nose and the top part of the gullet. By means of this communication the average ear has the same pressure as the external ear and the eardrum supports his stability.
So much in the swallowing or with the yawn it is possible to open Eustaquio's horn and it allows that the air between and go out of the average ear, supporting the pressure of the air in both sides of the equal eardrum.
If by some cause Eustaquio's horn is obstructed, these pressures falter and it is possible to force to the eardrum up to his break, barotrauma.
This situation is frequent with the changes of altitude, as on having traveled in plane, having practised diving or having driven between mountains.
If the nose is already obstructed previously by cold or allergy this problem turns out to be aggravated.

SYMPTOMS
- Sickness
- Pain or inconvenience in the ear in one or both sides
- Hipoacusia
- Congestion sensation or taponamiento in the ears
- Ear pain
- Pressure sensation in the ears
- Nosebleed
DIAGNOSIS
In the exploration with an otoscopio it is possible to appreciate the injury or even the hemorrhage derived from the break.
TREATMENT
Skills must be realized to open Eustaquio's horn like deglutir or to yawn forcibly, also it is possible to chew chewing gum. The nose and the mouth to close, and to extract air to force the air entry to the average ear opening Eustaquio's horn, what is called a Valsalva maneuver.
Also if there is a cold, bacterial infection or allergy associate medicines for it:
- Antihistamines
- Decongestant oral or in nasal aerosol
- Steroids
- Antibiotics
Sometimes a surgery is necessary repairer of the eardrum.
