DEFINITION
It is called a radiation not ionizante to all energy in the shape of waves that propagate across the space.
ORIGIN OF THE RADIATIONS NOT IONIZANTES
The electromagnetic fields are natural phenomena; the galaxies, the sun, the stars express radiation of low thickness, and in the ambience there exist electrical charges that generate magnetic fields to which we are submitted permanently, and that become much more intense, for example, during the electrical thunderstorms.
But these natural electrical and magnetic fields there has joined in the last century a wide number of artificial fields, created by industrial machinery, electrical lines, domestic appliances, etc. that exhibit us every day to an additional radiation. Although, with some exception, all this artificial radiation is much weaker than the natural electromagnetic fields, in many professions of the electronic, railroad sector and of telecommunications the exhibition is continued.
BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS
The radiation of high frequency and the microwaves provoke molecular vibrations, producing heat - hence his domestic and industrial employment - with what they can produce burns from a certain quantity of absorbed radiation.
The radiation of extremely low frequencies was considered to be innocuous. It is demonstrated, nevertheless, that it can produce electrical changes in the membrane of all the cells of the body, altering the cellular flows of some ions, especially the calcium, what might have important biological effects. This way, multiple studies have been published in the last two decades, quoting a possible relation of the electromagnetic fields of low energy with the origin of certain cancers, especially leukemia. Also they have tried to be related to alterations of the reproductive, neurological and cardiovascular device, and to fetal malformations.
ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATIONS AND CANCER
Although it is undoubted that exercise biological effects, the role of the radiations not ionizantes like carcinogenic agents is polemic. It is thought that, in any case, they would act like tumor promoters, with scarce or void initial power to turn normal genes into oncogenes. In a lot of works there has decided a major relative risk of leukemia, cerebral tumors and other cancers in subjects that reside in the proximities of the lines of high tension and between different exposed populations professionally. The firmest association suspicion has been established by the infantile leukemia.
Nevertheless, the studies are contradictory, especially for the difficulty of measuring the exhibition to the radiation not ionizante and the secondhand epidemiologic-statistical methods. This way, multiple works exist in the opposite direction. From the point of view of the public health, it is thought that it is necessary to consider these finds to be serious warnings on the potential adverse effects of the radiation not ionizante; although, before the absence of definitive evidence, the only recommendation might be that of "prudent avoidance".
