DEFINITION
The mumps or parotiditis is an infectious illness caused by a virus, it is contagious and epidemic, producing an inflammation of the glands you will salivate (parotid glands), hence it is called parotiditis, that are below and to the sides of the low jaw.
CAUSES
The mumps is caused by a virus of the family of the paramixovirus, which transmits from person person across the droplets of the respiration or for even for the contact with articles with remains it salivates, glasses, silverware, etc...
The parotiditis happens often in epidemics affecting children between 2 and 12 years who have not been vaccinated previously against the illness. But it is possible to produce in adults who have no had skylight previously the illness.
Between the contact with the virus and the appearance of the illness they can happen more than 10 days even up to 20.
In the adult it is complicated usually more with affectation than other organs like the testicles, the brain and the pancreas creating enough complications.

SYMPTOMS
The symptoms of the mumps are:
- Pain in the area parotídea under the jaw.
- Distension of the area parotídea under the jaw
- Throat of gullet and of head
- Fever.
And when complications appear there can be pain and inflammation testicular.
DIAGNOSIS
The exploration of the glands parotídeas inflamed and the symptoms context there are the method of definitive diagnosis, is not needed to do other studies.

TREATMENT
Since it is a viral infection, it is autolimited and only they usually happen non-conducting like paracetamol to doses adapted to the weight with a frequency from 4 until 6 hours.
The application of cold compresses locally can improve a little the symptoms. And they usually the gargles with lukewarm water with salt, the soft food and drink indicate abundant liquids.
This infection cannot recur generates immunity of for life.
