DEFINITION
The external sharp earache is the inflammation of the external auditory conduit (C.A.E)., that happens in swimmers and is characterized by pain of ear and itch.
INCIDENCE AND CAUSES
It is observed by maximum frequency in summer, in children and adolescents, as regards the baths of fresh water (swimming pools, etc). The excess of earwax and the maceration or traumatism of the C.A.E. (rods, stoppers...) they predispose to the infection for bacteria (Pseudomonkey, streptococci) or fungi.

SYMPTOMS
- Pain of ear that it increases on having touched the pavilion and on having chewed.
- Sensation of itch or moisture in the C.A.E.
- Unilateral Otorrea (Secretion for the ear).
DIAGNOSIS
The pediatrician will diagnose easily this problem, for the symptoms that the child recounts, and helped by an otoscopio (a simple instrument to look at the ear).
TREATMENT
Type includes a series of general measurements, treatment of the pain with analgesics paracetamol, aspirin, ibuprofeno or codeine, and the drops employment óticas that include an antibiotic to which the causal microorganism is sensitive (ciprofloxacino, gentamicina, etc) and an anti-inflammatory one. If there exists affectation of the eardrum, inflammation of the pavilion or ganglions in the area, it is necessary to add an antibiotic for mouth (amoxicilina/ácido clavulánico, cefuroxima, etc). The relapses are very frequent. To avoid them, it is convenient:
- Not to bathe (or at least, the head is not wetted on having bathed).
- Not to take a shower to wash the hair without protection of the ears.
- To use neither stoppers nor cotton in the ears, which retain the moisture.
- Not to use cotton rods, which injure the C.A.E.
