DEFINITION
The decrease of the function of the lachrymal glands is what produces the picture of the dry eye. Sometimes it is possible to complicate and to present a secondary engrosamiento of the cornea and a decrease of the visual keenness. It is more frequent in persons of more age, or associate to the continued use and during years of glasses of contact. The possibility of burns for volatile chemicals or for excess of temperature they are different of the possible causes. Sometimes, the dry eye is secondary to other rheumatic illnesses and similar others.
SYMPTOMS
The symptoms of the dry eye go from a light annoyance with a fine sands sensation or of having a strange body inside the eye up to a serious inconvenience accompanied by sensibility to the light (photophobia).
DIAGNOSIS
The doctor can do a Schirmer test to measure the valuation of moisture of a strip of calibrated role that is placed in the end of the eyelid, to be able to measure the quantity of tear that takes place.
Also he can inspect the movie that takes the tear with the lamp of crack (biomicroscope). It is possible to place a coloring as the Fluoresceína or Rosa Bengala in the eye to do that the above mentioned movie is more visible.
Also it is possible to do a general study to discard rheumatic illnesses that could produce a second time the dry eye.
TREATMENT
In the secondary dry eye to the use of glasses of contact what is recommended it is to use a little time the lenses of contact, which are in good condition of conservation and porosity, etc...
Like treatment, artificial tears can be used as drops, during the day, to dampen and the lubricating ointments, in the nights, which can serve for more serious cases. Also small stoppers can be placed in the drainage conduits of the tears to help to that these remain for much time in the surface of the eye. The slightly treated dry eye can go so far as to produce ulcers or infections of the cornea are important complications.
