DEFINITION
The aseptic meningitis is a frequent, serious illness although rarely fatal, caused by certain viruses. The word meningitis means the inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord.
INCIDENCE
Any person can contract aseptic meningitis. The illness is more common in children.
HOW ARE TRANSMITTED THE VIRUSES THAT CAUSE THE MENINGITIS
Different viruses can cause the aseptic meningitis, so that the transmission depends on the type of implied virus. The most common viruses enter across the mouth, multiply in the body and are eliminated across the feces. The dirty hands can take the virus and spend it to another person (what is called a fecal - oral transmission). The viruses that cause aseptic meningitis can be transmitted up to weeks after spent the infection.
SYMPTOMS OF AN ASEPTIC MENINGITIS
The symptoms appear from 3 until 6 days after the exhibition: Sudden beginning of fever with headache, rigidity of neck, and sensation of general discomfort. Eruption can appear in the skin. Certain viruses can cause also symptoms of cold, pharyngitis, gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhea, vomiting) and associate respiratory problems.
DIAGNOSIS
Before a meningitis suspicion in a child, the pediatrician must realize a lumbar puncture for analysis of the liquid rockfish - raquídeo. Sometimes there can be indicated other tests (cerebral Scanner, etc) to make sure that the child does not have other more serious illnesses.
TREATMENT
There is no specific treatment for the aseptic meningitis.
The pediatrician will try to relieve the symptoms (fever, headache...) and to prepare any possible complications appearance. Most of the children recover in less than 7 days.
PREVENTION OF THE ASEPTIC MENINGITIS
Since most of the cases are caused by viruses that are transmitted across the feces, the diagnosed children of aseptic meningitis must be sure of washing to conscience their hands after using the bath. It is fundamental always to wash his/her/its hands after changing nappies.
