DEFINITION

The lumpectomía is the surgical eradication of one ó more bundles in the breast.

DESCRIPTION

A bundle in the breast can be a cyst full of fluid, or a solid textile mass. It has always to of doing to him a biopsy (capture of a sample of textile) to determine if there are (cancerous) present malignant cells.

Almost two thirds of the bundles of the breast are benign, but if the woman has spent the menopause the possibility that it is malignant increases.

The intervention is realized by general anesthesia or by the sedated patient and without pain (with local anesthesia). The surgeon does an incision on the bundle and this one is extracted in a piece and gets about to the laboratory for an immediate examination.

Later the incision closes.

INDICATIONS

The precocious detection of the bundles in the breast is the most important. Remember that most of the bundles in the breast are not diagnosed in the consultation of the doctor but the proper woman in his house by means of a self-examination. Whenever it notices a bundle in the breast that persists or does not disappear in a few days it must come to the doctor as soon as possible.

EXPECTATIONS AFTER THE SURGERY

The result of a lumpectomía depends on the type of bundle that is. If the bundle is benign the result is of a finished reference without complications. If the bundle is malignant, the result depends on the expansion of the tumor. A radiation therapy is done usually in addition to the surgery.

In many cases of malignant bundles, a lumpectomía followed by a therapy of radiation is usually so effective as a radical mastectomy (entire eradication of the breast). Normally a lumpectomía does not need a surgery of reconstruction of the breast.

CONVALESCENCE

The convalescence period is very short.

• Hemorrhages.
• Infections

COST

The cost of any surgery changes significantly between surgeons, medical facilities, and regions of the country.

The costs can be ordained for groups:

• Surgeon: 300,00 to 900,00 euros.
• Anesthetist: 120,00 to 300,00 euros.
• Hospital expenses, including taken care of infirmary and operating theater: 240,00 to 600,00 euros.
• Medicines: 30,00 to 120,00 euros.
• Other additional expenses, if complications exist (transfusions, etc...) or analysis or Rx are realized. (In this case the biopsy is essential): 240,00 to 600,00 euros.

The changeability of every case is a fact being able to be considering to be a basic cost for 1.030,00 euros by intervention without complications.
