DEFINITION
The colecistectomía is the surgical intervention, which is realized to remove a sick biliary vesicle.
DESCRIPTION
The surgery is realized to remove a vesicle that becomes infected (colecistitis), that is inflamed, or that is blocked (obstructed) for being full of gallstones.
The vesicle surgery is realized under general anesthesia. It can be done by means of an abdominal incision or by means of several small incisions and the use of a tool of special scope.

If the vesicle is much inflamed, infected or has big gallstones, and his extraction seems to be complicated, the abdominal access is the most advisable thing. In this case a small incision is realized, in the right side of the abdomen, under the rim of the ribs. The liver one moves to exhibit the vesicle. The veins and the biliary conduits (artery and conduit quístico) must be cut and the vesicle is extracted. The colédoco (common conduit of bile) that transports the bile to the digestive pipe from the liver is examined to verify the presence of possible blockades or stone presence. After closing the access route, a drainage pipe is left for some days so that there could go out the (liquid) exudados of the inflammation or infection.
If the process is slightly advanced and the intervention can be programmed, this one can be carried out by means of laparoscopy. In this case there is used a device, called laparoscopio, which introduces in the abdomen close the bellybutton.
The laparoscopy instruments to turn by means of of two small orifices perforated previously. There is located the vesicle and the biliary conduits (artery and conduit quístico); they are cut and the vesicle is extracted.
INDICATIONS
The vesicle surgery is indicated to treat the such illnesses of the vesicle like:
- Gallstones (colelitiasis).
- Inflammation for infection (colecistitis).
- Abdominal pain intense due to a vesicle colic.
- I block of the biliary conduits (biliary obstruction).
EXPECTATIONS AFTER THE SURGERY
The result of the colecistectomía is usually good. The symptoms disappear completely in 90 % of the patients.
CONVALESCENCE
It is possible to obtain an entire recovery of the surgical intervention of vesicle in approximately 3 weeks. The surgery by means of laparoscopy needs a shorter stay in the hospital. Normally the patient is at home at 12 p.m.
RISKS
- The risks of any intervention under general anesthesia:
- Reactions to the medication.
