• Triple vaccine

DEFINITION

It is a vaccine combined to protect against the diphtheria, the lockjaw and the tosferina (it is a vaccine "3-en-1").

It is possible to administer children younger than 7 years, by means of injections in the arm or thigh.

CALENDAR OF VACCINATION

It is necessary to administer a minimum of 3 injections, although they are recommended up to 5; normally at the age of 2, 4, 6, 15 and 18 months. It usually recommend a memory dose before the escolarizaciónó (at the age from 4 to 6 years).

Also there is indicated a dose of memory of the vaccine of the lockjaw between the 14 to 16 years of age and hence from now on every 10 years. Except in case of allergic reaction before to the toxoide of tosferina, the DPT must always be administered.

BENEFIT

If the calendar of the DPT follows correctly there is achieved an immunization of 85 % for the diphtheria, and of 70 to 90 % to the tosferina (pertussis).

In both cases, if the illness appears, his course is softer.

The immunization against the lockjaw is 95 %.

RISK

The DPT often causes light effects (fever or febrícula, light irritability, inflammation in the place of the injection a few days).

In most cases these effects owe the tosferina toxoide to themselves (pertussis).

The serious complications happen in less than 1 % of the cases.

These complications include:

• High fever (more of 39ºC).
• Convulsions (feverish or not). If there are previous convulsions the risk increases.
• Allergic shock.
• Cerebral damages. They usually give for true predisposition or in association to other pictures. Very rarely only for the vaccine.

PRECAUTIONS

• If the child presents fever or catarrhal process has to of be waiting a few days.
• If there are precedents of feverish convulsion it has to of being very careful with the fever and controlling it closely.
• It should consult his pediatrician before a new dose in case after the previous dose it has appeared:
  • Feverish convulsion between the 3 to 7 days later to the injection.
  • Any cerebral problem in 7 days later to the injection.
  • Problem of allergy a few hours later to the injection.
  • Fever of 39th C more in 2 days later to the injection.
  • Persistent crying during 2 days later to the injection
