DEFINITION
There is a surgical procedure consisting of the resection of a congenital bony excrescence a so called torus, which usually appears centrally in the palate and for lingual, bisideways, in the jaw.
SYMPTOMS
The most habitual indication is that the presence of the torus prevents the seat of the removable prosthesis and/or causes ulcerations or chronic annoyance for decubituses.
SKILL
A case history and a correct previous exploration are indispensable to reach a correct diagnosis. It is necessary to realize a suitable previous X-ray study. The surgical resection begins after realizing a suitable incision, the bone splits with fissure strawberries and it is eliminated by chisel, ending with the regularization by means of surgical burs and suturing appropriately the rims. The resection must be limited to the indispensable minimum and must preserve the periostio.
COMPLICATIONS
The possible complications can be:
- injury of anatomical structures (glasses, nerves, cavities),
- haematomas,
- edemas,
- neuralgias,
- hemorrhages,
- infections,
- formation of cicatriciales textiles or mucous tears,
- problems in the retention, etc.
