 DEFINITION
In the later part of the testicles there is a rolled up pipe that constitutes the first part of the conduit that transports the sperm (to see in Image - B-). This pipe is the epididymis and the epididimitis is the inflammation of the same one. In the epididimitis, the inflamed area is warm and lasts to the tact. The epididimitis is produced normally by a bacterium, although sometimes it can take place for other causes.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
- Pain in the scrotum, generally intense, that develops gradually at several hours or days.
- Distension.
- Fever.
DIAGNOSIS
The pain in the testicles that develops throughout several hours and is accompanied by fever, suggests an epididimitis. Normally only fond of a testicle. The doctor must take a sample of urine and a sample of secretion of the prostate gland to identify the infectious organism.
IS THE EPIDIDIMITIS IMPORTANT?
The epididimitis is an acute disease that can be corrected by medication. It does not affect to the genital organs. Occasionally it can evolve to a chronic epididimitis and this needs a surgical intervention to relieve the symptoms.
TREATMENT
Medication
For the epididimitis of bacterial origin an antibiotic is prescribed. As his sexual couple can be infected by the same bacterium, it will be necessary same or similar treatment that that of his couple.
Other therapies
- I rest in bed.
- Application of cold cloths in the scrotum.
- Elevation of the scrotum.
- Analgesics.
