DEFINITION

The drainage timpánico is the surgical procedure that is realized to drain (to open way a) the secretions of the average ear (to see A and B in the Figure 1) to the external ear, by means of an incision in the eardrum and the inclusion of a few pipes in this one (to see C in the Figure 2)

DESCRIPTION

It is realized under general anesthesia.

An incision is carried out in the eardrum, there being sucked the liquid accumulated in the average ear. A drainage pipe puts itself later in the incision that allows to keep on draining liquid outside and air dried inwards.

The incision is without sutures and it cleans. It closes to a few months, falling down towards the external ear the inserted pipes.

INDICATIONS

• Infectious repetition earaches for time (more than 3 in one of year).
• Persistent ear pain.
• Lacking in audition (of more than 3 months) for secretions accumulated in average ear.
• Presence of acúfenos (noises in the ear), sickness or dizziness of repetition.

EXPECTATIONS AFTER THE SURGERY

The operation improves the pain and the audition recovers. The infections diminish significantly.

In case of recurrence it is possible to repeat the intervention, with the inclusion of new pipes of drainage.

CONVALESCENCE

It is an ambulatory intervention, which does not need hospitable revenue.

Stoppers must put themselves in the ears or prohibit the baths of sea or swimming pool. For some days there is even recommended the use of a cap of plastic to prevent the water from penetrating in the ear during the shower.

RISKS

• The risks of any intervention under anesthesia:
• Reactions to the medication.
• Respiratory problems.
• Hemorrhages.
• Infections
• Additional risks:
• Bad healing of the eardrum, with loss of audition.

COST

The cost of any surgery changes significantly between surgeons, medical facilities, and regions of the country.

Also, when the indication happens in small children, the care is more exhaustive.

The costs can be ordained for groups:

• Surgeon: 450,76 to 1.202,00 euros.
• Anesthetist: 120,20 to 300,51 euros.
• Hospital expenses, including taken care of infirmary and operating theater: 180,30 to 601,00 euros.
• Medicines: 30,05 to 120,20 euros.
• Other additional expenses, if complications exist (transfusions, etc...) or analyses are realized or Rx.: 30,05 to 120,20 euros.

The changeability of every case is a fact being able to be considering to be a basic cost for 901,52 euros by intervention without complications.
