DEFINITION
The ear pain takes place for the liquid accumulation in the average ear and for the pressure that this piled up liquid exercises on the eardrum and other surrounding structures.
The average ear is the one that is placed between the eardrum and the internal ear. It is a cavity that has a narrow and short drainage called Eustaquio's horn towards the nasal cavities. When because of a cold or a bacterial infection there takes place the obstruction of the horn of Eustaquio due to an edema, the normal liquid drainage one prevents from the average ear towards the exterior and the liquid accumulates provoking a bad ventilation, pain and loss of the audition.

CAUSES OF THE EARACHE
The causes of the pain are not necessary the proper illnesses of the ear, since it can be produced also by infections and other problems of the nose, the oral cavity, the gullet and the joint of the jaw.
In the small children the pain not always owes to an infection, since to be for other causes like the water accumulation during the bath, the retention of soap or shampoo or the annoyance of the channels for the use of cotton rods. The pain in the ear can be sharp, dull, urente, transitory or constant. But in small children it can appear only with an increase of the irritability and sensibility of the area of the ear. The most frequent causes are:
- Obstruction of the external ear (for a strange object or wax in the ear).
- Infection of the external or internal ear.
- Sharp or chronic average earache.
- Sharp Barotrauma, for the rapid change in the altitude.
- Broken or perforated eardrum.
- Dental infection.
- Infection of the bosoms paranasales.
- Arthritis of the jaw.
- Annoyance of the gullet with pain that is radiated to the ears.
TREATMENT
The general measures that can take at home they are:
- To support a humid ambience.
- To use an analgesic antinflamatorio of free sale as it can be the paracetamol or the ibuprofeno.
- The compress fry applied locally it can help to have less pain.
- The ear pain caused, on having lowered ó to rise quickly from or to big heights it is possible to relieve the deglutir or to swallow saliva, on having chewed chewing gum or with other methods and, in case of the babies, it is possible to leave to them that they suck of a feeding-bottle during the descent.
Other treatment methods must be consulted with his doctor:
- To unblock Eustaquio's horn the antihistamines and the decongestant ones can be used or the nasal drops diminish the quantity of nasal secretion and achieve the contraction of the mucous membranes.
- These medicines must be used only for a few days and of persisting the symptoms for much time, it is necessary to consult again with the doctor.
- Also the drops use can be useful óticas for the intense pain, always with prescription of the doctor.
Later if the picture persists the doctor will have to do a study to see the possibility of more persistent causes or chronicles of the process.
