 THE CORTICOIDS OR STEROIDS
They are used like antinflamatorios in diverse illnesses.
To know which of them is indicated in every case we must know:
- the rapidity of his action - the potency of his action
- the associate collateral effects
In cases of Urgencies those of rapid action are used, in cases of long treatments we will choose those of more long action, if it is necessary, and if those who could emulate a normal secretion. Those of action mineralocorticoide will produce more liquids retention for it they are counterindicated in long therapies. Those of long action do not emulate the normal secretion of the body and produce adrenal atrophy, by it they are not used in therapies of long duration.
In the long treatments those of Intermediate duration are used, in morning dose and in the alternate days.
The most important side effects of the steroids are:
Alterations of the growth Osteoporosis Slimming of the skin Cutaneous stretch marks Glaucoma Increase of the hair Increase of the weight Liquids retention Adrenal glands atrophy
