DEFINITION

It is an illness in which (malignant) cancerous cells are in the textiles of the lung. This lung cancer appears in smokers or exsmokers.

SYMPTOMS

It can appear with cough different from the habitual one or pain in the breast that does not disappear, noises in the respiration, sensation of drowning (shortness of breath), sputa with blood, aphonia or distension in the face and the neck.
The prognosis and the election of treatment will depend on the extension stage in which there is the cancer, of the size of the tumor, or the type of cancer of lung.

EXTENSION STAGES

The classification for stages is a classification that is realized after the suitable studies that could define the extension of the cancer (of the cancerous cells) for the lung, for nearby areas or for the body.
This way we can differentiate the following stages as cancerous cells are in:

Limited stage: Cells appear only in a lung and in the nearby lymphatic ganglions.
Extensive stage: The cancerous cells have been spread out of the lung to other textiles in the thorax or to other parts of the body.
Stage appellant: When there look like cells again as soon as treatment was received.

TREATMENT

Treatments exist for all the patients with cancer of lung of small cells. There are used three classes of treatment, the surgery (in the limited stage), the radiotherapy (for the principal tumor and the metástasis) and the chemotherapy (in all the extension phases)

LIMITED STAGE
1. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the thorax with or without prophylactic cranial radiotherapy
2. Chemotherapy with or without prophylactic cranial radiotherapy.
3. Surgery continued by chemotherapy with or without prophylactic cranial radiotherapy.

EXTENSIVE STAGE
1. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the thorax with or without prophylactic cranial radiotherapy
2. Chemotherapy with or without prophylactic cranial radiotherapy.
3. Radiotherapy of the metástasis (brain, bones)

STAGE APPELLANT
1. Radiotherapy to reduce pain
2. Clinical studies exist with new medicines.
