DEFINITION
They are defined as those that, for a physical mechanism, prevent the union of the sperm and the ovum. As this barrier is effective for another type of microorganisms, also they are useful to prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (ETS):
- Gonococia.
- Condilomas.
- Herpes.
- Tricomonas.
- Candidiasis.
- Hepatitis B.
- BEEN.
- Syphilis.
- Etc...
CONDOMS
It is a thin case of latex (if his barrier function is not of latex it is useless or, at least, doubtful) that puts itself before the sexual relation and it is not necessary to remove until the end of the physical contact. The sperm is gathered inside the condom, after the ejaculation, and must be supported in his place and only come out after the sexual relation.
Only each one serves for a sexual relation, therefore washing it to be able to use it again is slightly advisable, since it loses his lubrication and his safety as for the contraception and protection opposite to illnesses.
In any case one of the 100 sexual relations can be fertile with this method; by what, bearing in mind that the sperm is hundreds of bigger than times the bacteria and virus, it is deduced that it is not an absolute method of preventing the transmission of illnesses.
The condoms are obtained easily and to low cost in most of the drugstores. Some centers of familiar planning offer condoms of free form. As per statistics it has been proved that 12 pregnancies happen in 1 year between 100 couples using this method. The efficacy increases when spermicides are used also.
VAGINAL SPERMICIDES
They can be included here, since by means of a chemical mechanism they kill or stop without viability to the sperms. There are froth, creams, or suppositories, which get in the vagina before the sexual relation. This method is easily available: they can be bought in most of drugstores. Nevertheless, used by himself it is not very effective. Approximately 21 pregnancies can happen in 1 year of between 100 women using this method. It must be born in mind that it is not a method of preventing the transmission of illnesses.
DIAPHRAGM
It is a glass of gum or flexible latex that fills with spermicide in cream or gel, and it puts itself in the vagina, on the cérvix, before the sexual relation. It is necessary to stop in the place from 6 until 8 hours after the sexual act. The diaphragms must be prescribed by the doctor, who determines the size and appropriate type of diaphragm for every woman. 100 women give themselves approximately 18 pregnancies in one of year between using this method. It must be born in mind that it is not a method of preventing the transmission of illnesses.
VAGINAL CONTRACEPTIVE SPONGE
It is a soft synthetic sponge impregnated with spermicide, which becomes damp and puts in the vagina, on the cérvix, before the sexual relation. It is quite similar to the diaphragm like barrier mechanism.
After the sexual relation, the sponge must be left in the place from 6 until 8 hours. This method is free without prescription in most of drugstores. 100 women happen between 18 and 28 pregnancies in one of year between using this method. It must be born in mind that it is not a method of preventing the transmission of illnesses.
