DEFINITION
The anisocoria is a medical term that describes an asymmetry of the iris at the cost of a different width of the pupils. Generally it is evident to simple sight appearing both different eyes in the opening of the pupils.
CAUSES
When it appears from the infancy without any associate symptom it is possible to be supposed that it is a hereditary process, especially if there is another affected member of the family. A topic is other times without apparent relation and that it is transitory returning to his normal or symmetrical situation without c have known the cause.
In other occasions there are cerebral injuries as they can be:
- Hemorrhages intracraneales
- Cerebral Aneurismas
- Cerebral tumors
- Meningitis
- Cerebral abscess
- Ocular glaucoma
- Syndrome of Claude Bernard-Horner (miosis, fallen eyelid and decrease of sudoración)
- Congenital injuries or tumors in the thorax
- Medications oftalmológicas.
DIAGNOSIS
When the anisocoria appears after a head traumatism it is necessary to think about a hemorrhage.
If it turns out to be accompanied by headache, vomiting, or double vision must be thought about a cerebral tumor problem.
If it appears with fever, headache in addition to rigidity in the neck can be thought about a meningitis.
Other times it can be for an ocular glaucoma and in this chaos it will appear with pain and loss of vision in an eye.
If it turns out to be alone the difference of size of the pupils will have to be consulted with the doctor but it will not be serious in most of the cases.
